Dancing For Our Heroes -

Dancing For our Heroes

This year's annual event, Dancing for our Heroes will mirror Rick's Café in the movie "Casablanca." Local celebrities are paired with professional dancers who dance the Tango, Cha Cha, or Swing.  Money is raised by voting on the couple for Best Performances and "Peoples Choice Award."  Other participants may be seen "line dancing" or doing the SC Shag.  The money raised benefits the Cancer Association of Anderson and the SC Military Scholarship and Family Care Association, Inc.  These are our heroes fighting cancer and the families of our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This 3rd year event will be Friday April 3, 7:30 at the Civic Center of Anderson.  The celebrity dancers will be:

Kim McRae, WYFF

Kathryn Smith, Cancer Association of Anderson

Scott Webber, Wells Fargo Bank

Hugh Welborn, Anderson County Judge

Dictionary Project -
Dictionary Project

Each year members from our club visit local schools in Districts 1,2,3 to give all 3rd graders their own dictionaries.  We handed 1233 dictionaries to 3rd graders in 14 schools.  Leo Smith headed this project.

Literacy -

Literacy

With this year's focus on literacy our club adopted a kindergarten class.  Ms. Anderson's kindergarten class is at Nevitt Forest, a Title 1 School.  Members have been assigned to specific children who need that extra one on one attention and work with them each week.  Our goal is to give the children more "real life experiences." We join them for their holiday celebrations too. For Christmas the children rode the bus downtown to join us for our meeting and lunch.  They sang and were thrilled when Santa arrived with his black bag filled with individually wrapped packages. Carla Heritage our "project chairperson" has 7 mentors working in the class with her.  They are Carla Heritage, Kathryn Smith, Ovid Culler, Dr. Mattison, Rosemary Lindley, Cathy Golson and Leo Smith.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) -
The Rotary Club of Greater Anderson also supports RYLA, a week long motivational leadership training program for rising high school seniors held at Erskine College. In club year 2003-2004, we sponsored 2 students. The three Rotary Clubs in Anderson received 9 applications from school guidance counselors and faculty. The cost per student is $325 plus $60 in expenses.
Happy Bucks -

Happy Bucks

A weekly feature at our club meetings is “Happy Bucks.” For a donation, each member may speak about anything over the last week that has made him or her happy! The money raised supports monthly donations to local charities. The club gives $250 to a charity chosen by the members. Each month a different charity is chosen and occasionally other donations are made from this fund. The club also raises funds by working at least 30 hours at the Anderson Soiree held each April in downtown Anderson.

Habitat for Humanity -
The Rotary Club of Greater Anderson has provided labor to Habitat for Humanity and funds to eliminate land mines, as well as participating in Rotary International’s goal of abolishing polio. We are currently contributing to a local Centennial Project in honor of Rotary International’s 100th Anniversary!
